The cars vs bikes debate is one that doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon. Both sides have their fair share of supporters who refuse to budge on their thinking, and I’m one of them. As a bike-enthusiast who wants to add fuel to the fire, here’s my take on why a Royal Enfield (the de-facto bike for long trips in India) is a better option than a car when it comes to going on a road trip:
1. You’re free from the Cage
While most bikers refer to car drivers as ‘Cagers’ that’s not the cage I’m referring to here. I’m talking about that cage which keeps us locked up in a false sense of freedom from which there is no escape. We’re all imprisoned by our jobs, our familial obligations and such. That’s where a bike trip can help you out. Riding demands a sort of attention and concentration that erases all such problems and worries from your mind until the only thing left is the ride and nothing else. All other worldly problems just melt away in the wake of the wind hitting your face as you revel in the feeling of riding a bike, and you simply can’t recreate this feeling in a car even if you drive with the windows down.
2. Traffic? No problem!
The most idiotic thing about riding on Indian highways is that surprise traffic jam that greets you when you have to cross a small town or village. And if you are in a car, you my friend are so screwed. Before you realize what’s happening, you are stuck in an endless queue and moving at a snail’s pace behind a tractor or broken-down auto. Now if you happen to be on a bike, you will be cutting through the gaps between the cages (cars) and soon you are out of the jam and all smiles again
3. Save Fuel, Save Money
It’s a universal truth that bikes offer much better mileage than their four-wheeled counterparts. And since there’s no AC consuming even more fuel, you can save a lot of money on fuel by using a bike instead of a car for those long road trips. Maintenance is far cheaper and help is easier to get if you’re on a bike as well. Even if your RE breaks down in a remote town, the local mechanic will surely be able to help you out. This just means you can further than those cagers for the same amount of money.
4. You can take the road not taken
The scenic routes, the ones which are the most worth riding on, are usually in poor condition which can’t accommodate a car (The Manali-Leh route is one that comes to mind). But with a Royal Enfield, you have complete freedom to go wherever you want to.
5. A Royal Enfield is more fun than a car
There’s no such thing as a boring bike ride. No matter what problems or tensions you have in life, going for a bike ride is one of the best ways to forget them, even if it’s just for a little while. Had a bad day at work? Take the long route home and watch as everything bearing down on you just seems to ebb away during the ride. Even if you’re getting bored and need some alone time, you can just get on your bike and set off to wherever you want to go. And there are very few things in the world that can match the feeling of going on a long road trip on a Royal Enfield.
