Say what you will about the condition of Indian roads but you just can’t argue against the vast variety of terrain our country offers to us road trip enthusiasts. From beautiful ocean-hugging coastal roads to the challenging winding roads in the Himalayas and everything in between, there’s no shortage of options when it comes to deciding your next bike trip. So whether you like blasting through highways or canyon carving is more your thing, you might want to see this list of the best roads in India that are perfect for a summer bike trip:

1) Amboli Ghat, Maharashtra

The tranquil hill lies in the Sahyadri Mountain range of the majestic Western Ghats near Sawantwadi, Maharashtra. Amboli Ghat is one of the most beautiful mountain ghats in India and it has it’s fair share of twisting and looping roads that the ghats are so famous for. This region receives heavy rainfall and is surrounded by thick forests, cascading waterfalls and amazing nature landscapes which makes it a wonderful driving route.

2) Mussoorie – Dhanaulti, Uttarakhand

While the drive from Delhi to Mussoorie is amazing on its own, the 24 km ride to Dhanaulti is at another level entirely. The fresh mountain air whipping around you as you climb through alpine forests of Deodar, Rhododendron and Oak while the lower Himalayan range forms an unchanging background in your view is an experience every biker should have at least once in their lives.

3) Ranni – Idukki, Kerala

Anything in ‘God’s own country’ should be beautiful by definition, but that would be an understatement when it comes to this stretch of road and, of course, the paradise that is Idukki. Roads in perfect conditions that wind through thick forests as you race towards a stunning destination is every biker’s dream come true, and this road is nothing short of exactly that.

4) Srinagar to Leh, Jammu Kashmir

The holy grail of all road trips in India, a bike trip to Ladakh is a rite of passage for anyone who wants to considered a true adventure biker. You can’t get much further away from commercialised civilisation any more than you will on this journey. And for your troubles you are treated with roads that take you next to rivers, stunning valleys and the mesmerising sight of the majestic Himalayas undulating right in front of you.

5) Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu

A road trip in Tamil Nadu during the summer is usually far from ideal but you might want to make an exception in this case. Dhanushkodi (located on the southern tip of Pamban Island) is a mere 28 kms from Sri Lanka and, in Hindu mythology, is famous for being the place from which Ram and his army constructed a bridge out of stones to reach Lanka. But forget all that; It’s the road, which has the Indian Ocean on one side and the Bay of Bengal on the other, which makes it totally worth the hot weather.
