Why pink city?
Back during the reign of Sawai Ram Singh, the entire city was painted pink for the welcome of the prince of Wales and pink being the color associated with hospitality was the king’s first and only choice. The colour can still be witnessed today as a reminder of the hospitality that the city and its people offer travelers.
A well-planned city
The city was planned in 1727 by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, making it one of the first planned cities in the country. What’s more fascinating is the fact that the entire city is planned according to the Indian Vastu Shastra, all the streets and markets are directed masterfully to face the East to West or the North to South directions.
The Hawa Mahal
Today, the Hawa Mahal is a tourist hotspot, but back when it was still the residence of families with royal lineage, the 953 windows of the structure were used by royal ladies to see how the people of the kingdom went about their lives in the street. The sheer number of windows would give the women a lot of options to take a sneak peek without getting noticed themselves.
In the reign of Sawai Man Singh II, the Sawai Mansingh stadium was built with a capacity of 30,000 people. That doesn’t feel like much today, but back then, the building was an architectural marvel. Today, the stadium holds various events in Cricket and other sports.
An observatory from an era long gone, the Jantar Mantar observatory was built by Sawai Jai Singh who was a king of the city who had a penchant for the skies. The observatory houses an impressive collection of architectural astronomical instruments and is a place every traveler must visit when they’re in the city.
