Rider Stories: Racing Youngster Ajay Chavan

This week WheelStreet brings to you the intriguing story of a young, dynamic and passionate rider. A spontaneous traveler and college-goer, Ajay Chavan loves to explore new places during his semester breaks and whenever he finds the time. Bitten by the travel bug, Ajay loves to travel and discover new and offbeat places which are far away from the crowd. He usually goes for rides or treks because the beauty of nature attracts him. This bike fanatic had developed an interest in bikes with time and prefers to ride because he feels that one can never get the same feeling in a car. Ajay claims, “When you ride a bike, you get to feel the breeze on your face. It becomes more about the journey and less about the destination while riding on two wheels.”

This young gentleman shares some interesting travel experiences with Team WheelStreet. According to Ajay, the most memorable incident was when he was traveling to Goa from Aurangabad with his friend. The distance was around 700 kilometers and they had stopped at Pune. Ajay jokingly adds, “When one gets into trouble, the journey becomes even more memorable.” This energetic rider had never been to Goa before and one day, he along with his friend made an impromptu plan to ride to Goa. Ajay had bought a bike one or two months before and they set out for their journey with only INR 8000 in their pockets.

After riding nearly 40 kilometers from Pune, Ajay felt that his bike tires had got punctured but they could not find a shop nearby so that they could get it fixed. After a lot of searching, they figured out a mechanic who informed that the tires were indeed punctured. “For an hour the mechanic was doing something with my bike. Since I was new to my bike as well, I didn’t know much about my own bike and was clueless as to what the mechanic was doing.”

After an hour, the mechanic demanded INR 3000 for the repairs. When Ajay refused to pay and claimed that puncture repairs did not cost that much, the mechanic started bullying them. Ajay and his friend were forced to give him the money. Since the duo did not have any money left they had to go back to Pune where they borrowed money from a friend and continued their journey. When Ajay traveled to Goa, he did not have a helmet and realized later that it was a crazy thing to do. The riders faced heavy rains on their way to Goa and the visibility was also quite poor. In spite of numerous hurdles in their journey, they were high in their riding spirit.

This passionate rider shares another memorable incident when he rode to Pawna Lake close to Pune with his friends. On the way, one of his friends had an accident and the situation had become a bit messy. “In spite of that we had a memorable time because when we ride, we forget everything else and concentrate on the road and the ride. We try to soak in as much as we can from our ride”, added Chavan.

Ajay does have plans to go to Ladakh and Hampi but it all depends on his college schedule. Ajay claimed, “Whenever I get some sort of a break from the busy college schedule, I always set out on a riding trip! It helps me to relax and concentrate better.” This young rider feels that bike rental services in Ladakh are a blessing for the college-goers. He states that” If one has to take the bike all the way from Maharashtra to Ladakh, it is quite expensive and is usually out of reach for most college-goers. Bike rental companies help us to fulfill our dreams without burning a hole in our pockets.”

According to Chavan, maintaining safety while riding is of utmost importance. “I had been to Goa without a helmet once and I realized what a huge risk I had taken!” He also feels that It is important to wear all the riding gears like jackets and boots while riding. Chavan has observed that many riders remove the rearview mirrors in order to make their bike look cool. Ajay feels that one should not mess up with the safety of the bike because it can lead to major and fatal accidents.
