Bangalore to Shivanasamudra Duration: 3-4 Hours

Shivanasamudra is a small island town in the Mandya district of Karnataka. It is situated on the banks of the river Kaveri, which forms the boundary to the Chamarajanagar District, and is also the location of one of the first Hydro-electric Power stations in Asia. The city is a great destination for those who love road trips and they can even hire bikes and rent two-wheelers of their choice to visit the town.

Shivanasamudra is 120 km from Bangalore, a site of extreme beauty. One can rent a bike in Shivanasamudra and go around the beautiful town. Situated on the banks of the River Kaveri, the area falls in the lap of forested hills and emerald green valleys. The Kaveri River snakes its way through the Deccan Plateau and falls down, giving rise to the beautiful twin waterfalls. Many people have the misconception that the left segment of the falls is called Gaganachukki while the right segment is called Bharachukki. In reality the Kaveri river splits itself into western and eastern branches. The western branch gives rise to the twin waterfalls of Gaganachukki, whereas the eastern branch forms the Bharachukki falls. The cascading edge of Bharachukki is a little wider than that of Gaganachukki. The island town of Shivanasamudra, which literally translates to “Lord Shiva’s sea”, divides the river into twin waterfalls. A part the Shivanasamudra falls is ‘U’ shaped, like the Niagara Falls in USA. The fall has a strong current and the gorge is pretty deep so it is a no-swimming zone.

The best time to see the falls is during the monsoons, from June to September.  The Shivanasamuram bike rental allows bikers to get two-wheelers on rent and go on a road trip with friends at affordable prices. The place is heaven for nature lovers, artists, poets, writers, painters, photographers, hopeless romantics and those who wish to dive into the beauty of a spiritual experience. The Gaganachukki waterfalls are best viewed from the Shivanasamudra watch tower and thus attract a crowd of photographers. Many balconies have been constructed near the Bharachukki falls too, to provide a safe place for shutter-bugs to capture the scenic beauty.

To maintain the beauty of the place, not many fast-food stalls and vendors are allowed here so bikers and pillions are advised to carry some edibles from the main city. They can easily find two-wheelers on rent in Shivanasamudra and make their road trip fun.

A number of ancient temples like Shivanasamuram and Somanathpur Temple are located around the region which makes the trip a breathtaking as well as a spiritual experience. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple located here which reflects the Dravidian style of architecture is referred to as "Madhya Ranga" and is held in high regard by the devotees. Madhya Ranga is an ancient temple housing a beautiful idol, yet being remotely located, only a few people dare to visit the temple. Most of the visitors are those who ride two-wheelers as bikes are easy to maneuver in hilly and narrow terrains. Those who wish to ride to the isolated temple for some solitude can approach bike rentals in Shivanasamudra.
